Perhaps, for me,the high-point of modernism was reached between 1979 and 2003. I was high on German consumerism and British tobacco as are many wasted people of my generation.
The big picture
Consumerism is a phase marking the industrial and economic decline of countries and states past their best.
That economic stage of rise and fall is announced in Britain by both talking of belt-tightening and government talk of pump-priming and boosting the economy.
.....
Resources no matter how seemingly endless are like earthly existence ultimately finite.
I am not a trained ethical guide but I believe that, from a personal conviction, that the Western way of life should be guided by a spirit of modest adequacy and anti-consumerism and a rejection of gluttony
That is the good fight of all civilization, both a rejection of Mr. Scrooge and consumerism.
